NLS National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled, Library of Congress
The National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) is a program administered by the Library of Congress. It provides a free national library service. This service offers braille and recorded materials to individuals who are blind or have a print disability. This makes it possible for them to access information in formats they can use. The program was established by an Act of Congress in 1931 to serve blind adults. It expanded in 1952 to include children. In 1962, it began to provide music materials. In 1966, it included individuals with other physical disabilities that prevent reading regular print. In 2016, NLS was permitted to provide refreshable braille displays. The NLS program is funded annually by Congress. Books and materials are mailed as “Free Matter for the Blind or Handicapped.” This is done through a separate appropriation to the United States Postal Service. NLS service is provided directly by a network of cooperating libraries. These libraries are funded through state, local, and/or federal sources.
The network began with 19 libraries in 1931. It has expanded to include 55 regional libraries, 26 subregional libraries, and 13 advisory and outreach centers. These centers serve all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam.
Beyond Sight
We are a nonprofit, 501 (c) (3) organization in Brooklyn, NY. We seek to provide accessible, free after-school programs. These programs are designed exclusively for teens managing vision loss and blindness. We recognize the crucial role of these academic and recreational programs in upward mobility. Therefore, we offer the key elements to success. We bridge the gaps between the visually impaired and independent living. Our mission is to improve the socio-emotional and academic competencies of teens managing what society considers a disability. We challenge this notion by motivating young people to go beyond the limitations of sight.
Beyond Sight has Book Clubs… yes, you heard that correctly, Book Clubs.
